Skins
Accessories/armor, Buildings, Caravans, Mounts, Pets, and Ships sold in the cosmetic store are skins.[3][4][5]
- Skins are cosmetic items that do not grant the user any benefit.[6]
- Skins are only be able to be applied to things that have already been earned, crafted or found within Ashes of Creation.[7][8]
- Owning cosmetics does not guarantee the acquisition of the item the cosmetic can be used on. Players must still achieve the corresponding item/building.[7] – Steven Sharif
- Caravan skins change the appearance of an in-game mount and in-game caravan that are hooked up to each other.[13][14]
- The best skins will be in-game achievable.[15]
- The best skins will be in-game achievable (obviously “best” is subjective, so I’d say the most ornate and detailed/unique).[15] – Steven Sharif
Cosmetics
Cosmetics provide a wide array of customization in Ashes of Creation.[17]
- There are no pay-to-win gameplay benefits from any purchasable items.[16][18]
- All skin cosmetic items are cosmetic items only and do not grant the user any other benefit. The lore text is flavor text, and background of the creatures and items in the world of Verra.[6]
- Types of cosmetics:
- Equitable cosmetics, both from a quantity and quality standpoint, are achievable through in-game means.[19][20] Cosmetics achievable in-game will be on-par, and in the case of legendary skins, even more elaborate than shop items.[21][22][16]
- I want to make sure that equitable cosmetics both from a quantity and quality standpoint are achievable through in-game achievements. Time, effort should let you be happy with what you can accomplish.[20] – Steven Sharif
- In my opinion quality of cash shop cosmetics should be equal to in game achievable cosmetics, but offer a diverse selection of unique looks.[23] – Steven Sharif
- There will be legendary cosmetics that are only achievable in-game that will never be offered in the cosmetic shop.[21][22][16]
- The most grand looking cosmetics will be from in-game achievment only.[24] – Steven Sharif
- There will not be recolors or material swaps on the monthly cosmetics as a means to populate in-game achievements.[21]
- There will be variants of the monthly cosmetics for NPCs and Mobs.[21][25]
- Component pieces of cosmetic armor may be reused in other in-game achievable gear sets.[21]
- From an armor standpoint, we cut armor sets up into many different pieces. These pieces can sometimes be used as part of other sets, that may include helmets, wrists, gloves etc. So while you will not see an achievable white version of the corvid castigator set in the game for example, you may see its shoulder piece used in another set, or its leggings, or wrist piece used in another set (not every piece as to form the whole set, but perhaps a couple pieces). This would be difficult to notice at first glance, due to the material, texture and color variation used, but this modular approach to content creation makes achieving a wide variety of looks achievable for an MMORPG of our size.[21] – Steven Sharif
- Different variants of store purchased cosmetic creatures (Pets and Mounts) may exist in the wild.[26][27]
- While the exact same skin will not be available again in the future once it's gone from the Shop, these skins are all variants of creatures that you can expect to see across Verra - so perhaps you will find one with a similar style in-game![26] – Sarah Flanagan
- Cosmetics can be used by all races but there may be slight variations to make them work with the body builds of each race.[28][29]
- There will not be mascot looking/furry cosmetics.[30]
- It's important to remember, Ashes is a NO-BOX COST subscription only game, with an optional cosmetic marketplace. This achieves a few things from a monetization model. Having a lower barrier to entry for players to try the game when they don't have to fork out $60 for the box price is good, our box price is 0$. This also places an emphasis on the game's retention and our continual updates and content creation to keep players playing and staying subscribed (a put your money where your mouth is sort of philosophy for us as a company). It also means players don't have to spend $60 every time there is an expansion.[21] – Steven Sharif
- Is there an answer that satisfies everyone? Nope. And that's ok. We are open and transparent with our philosophies and business model. You know what you are getting with Ashes and to me, given my experiences in other games, it is a nice breath of fresh air.[21] – Steven Sharif
- Costume and pet cosmetics don't have a level restriction. Building, ship, caravan and mount cosmetics require an in-game item to be obtained first to apply the cosmetic.[12][10]
- I know there have been quite a few questions regarding cosmetics over the years. As we get further along in development, we'll be providing more specific information regarding what specific buildings, items, etc., you can place each cosmetic on. We'll update this for all past items.[31] – Margaret Krohn
- Cosmetics are not tradeable with other players but can be reassigned to other characters (alts) within the same account.[32][33]
Artistic style
Ashes of Creation will have a higher graphical fidelity than most western games. It will not be too stylized or "cartoony".[35]
- We can push the limits a little bit on the graphical fidelity, especially using Unreal Engine 4... My desire was not to see very cartoony games. I'm not a big fan of highly stylized art.[35] – Steven Sharif
- It's not to say that people can't do steampunk well. I've enjoyed some steampunk stuff. I'm a very high fantasy oriented type of storyteller; and the inspiration for Ashes obviously comes from my pathfinder campaigns that I ran long ago; and those are always set in a high fantasy world. So it just compromises what I believe is the perspective of the storytelling in the environment.[36] – Steven Sharif
- Intrepid Studios does not use AI for art production.[37]
- We do not use AI for production, except in unique internal cases when communicating fast reference material.[37] – Steven Sharif
Obtaining cosmetics
Some cosmetics can be obtained in-game:[38]
Achievements may unlock some cosmetics.[38]
Not all cosmetics are obtainable through in-game means. These will be purchasable through the cosmetic store.[38]
Cash shop cosmetics will be limited in quantity, limited in time for purchase. They will be unique, but you will also have extremely difficult to gain cosmetics in game as well as unique cosmetics that look great and better... There will be a lot of cosmetics that are achievable in the game because that is a very fun aspect of MMO play.[39] – Steven Sharif
Cosmetic store
The Cosmetic store enables players to purchase Cosmetics for use in Ashes of Creation.[38] The cosmetic store offers limited time, limited quantity items to help sustain game development.[20]
- Equitable cosmetics, both from a quantity and quality standpoint, are achievable through in-game means.[20]
- Nothing in the cosmetic store will be pay to win.[18]
Nothing in our shop will ever be pay to win as we believe this practice greatly hurts the MMORPG genre.[18]
- Cash shop cosmetics will offer a diverse selection of unique looks.[23]
I want to incentivize purchase in the cosmetic shop for sustainability of what expansions we have intended, since we are not a box cost. I want to incentivize purchase by offering limited items: limited time, limited quantity, so you have confidence that when you purchase them, they won't be offered later on in some other way.[20] – Steven Sharif
- All cosmetic store items will be non-tradeable.[33] There will be no gifting mechanism for cosmetic items.[41]
I don't want cosmetic items that can be purchased from the market to be transferable... because it is in a way a transfer of money for potentially something in-game.[41] – Steven Sharif
Transferring cosmetics between alts
Strona do zarządzania kontem jest używana do przypisania pierwszy lub kolejny raz przedmiotów z crowdfundingu do konkretnej postaci:[42]
- Skórki kosmetyczne.[43]
- Przenoszenie przedmiotów pomiędzy postaciami, gdzie można je zastosować tylko do jednej postaci an raz.[44]
Racial skins
Racial skins are cosmetics that enable a player to change their character's racial appearance.[45][7][46][47]
- Racial skins transform the appearance of the character to that skin. The original racial appearance of the character is entirely replaced.[45]
- Racial skins are not costumes. This means that armor and character customization is possible on these.[48]
- There are plans to create other racial skins.[51]
- Some potential future ideas include undead and werewolf (lycan) skins.[52]
- Racial skins can be toggled on and off.[47]
- You're changing your race over to that, which means that you won't look uniquely different if you were a Vek angel or a Human angel.[45] – Steven Sharif
Freehold building skins
Freehold building skins were offered as Kickstarter and Summer crowdfunding rewards and were available in pre-order packs.[55][56][57][58][59]
- Freehold building skins can also be achieved in-game.[60]
- Freehold skins can be applied to blueprints matching the type of freehold building: housing, artisanship, and business.[54][60][62][55][10][11][12]
- Cosmetics that we have sold as part of different packs throughout the past- our pre-order system: Those cosmetics are split into three primary categories: housing, artisanship, and business; and we will have a breakdown that we're going to be releasing of the cosmetics that have come previously and which categories they exist in, but players will have the option to override the appearance of a blueprint that exists within one of those categories with an associated cosmetic skin; and that is obviously not just something that can be purchased through the pre-order system, but also can be achieved in-game as well- our cosmetics that can be applied to specific building types. And we don't get as granular where, let's say, you might have a shrine cosmetic, and you have, let's say, a blacksmith building that you wouldn't be able to apply the shrine to the blacksmith building. If the shrine exists in the artisanship lane you can apply it to any artisanship type building, but not to a house or business. so giving a little bit of additional context there.[60] – Steven Sharif
- The vast majority of cosmetic freehold skins apply to homestead buildings.[64]
- A planned feature may allow multiple buildings to be replaced by a single large cosmetic skin.[65]
- Cosmetics that are are very large in size- we will have a system that's not been developed yet, but we've been planning for this: we'll have a system where multiple buildings can be occupied space-wise by the larger cosmetic. So, a cosmetic might replace the visual appearance of one particular building, but then you'll be able to have that footprint occupy multiple buildings to replace the visual appearance. So that way you're still utilizing the similar amount of space.[60] – Steven Sharif
- Baronies won't impose any appearance restrictions on freehold buildings.[66]
Caravan skins
Caravan skins ("Pimp my caravan") were available in the cash shop (cosmetic store).[5]
- The skin changes the appearance of an in-game mount and in-game caravan that are hooked up to each other.[13][14]
- The caravan and mount components of the skin are not able to be utilized separately.[13][14]
- Building, ship, caravan and mount cosmetics require an in-game item to be obtained first to apply the cosmetic.[12][10]
You'll need your own creature and caravan hooked up to each other, and then the caravan cosmetic skin goes over all of them to make it look like what's pictured. you're not able to split out separately that caravan mount skin, hence why you'd want the separate mount skin if you wanted to ride it independently.[13] – Sarah Flanagan
Ship skins
Ship skins apply to certain ship types.[4]
- Building, ship, caravan and mount cosmetics require an in-game item to be obtained first to apply the cosmetic.[12][10]
Mount skins
Mounts are obtained through an early quest that is available to players in starting areas.[43]
- Mounts can also be found in the wild and tamed.[69][70]
- There are three different tiers of mount.[71]
- Aquatic/swimming mounts are classified as tier A.[72][73]
- Different tier mounts have different abilities that are unique to that tier. These may provide horizontal or vertical power gains.[74]
- Mounts can have up to four abilities, including speed boosts, offensive and defensive abilities.[75][76]
- Mount abilities are unlocked via the animal husbandry profession.[75]
- Mount speeds are determined by the base mount that skins are applied to.[77]
- Aquatic mounts are faster in water and slower on land. Land mounts are faster on land and slower in water.[78]
- Mounts will be purchasable from players utilizing Animal husbandry and taming.[79]
- Mounts will have rarities that they are either bred or acquired. These rarities may influence mount skills and visual effects, such as seasonal variations.[80]
- Fall damage that occurs while mounted will be first applied to the mount; and if the mount dies as a result, then the remaining damage may overflow onto the player, but this will be determined based on testing.[81]
- There may be emotes associated with mounts and pets, such as petting, hugging, or playing with them.[82]
- The majority of mounts are based on animals, but there may be some mounts based on inanimate objects in the future.[36]

Cosmetic pets
Cosmetic pets were available for purchase from the cosmetic store.[3]
Cosmetic pets, since non-functional from a gameplay perspective, can be summoned at lvl 1.[12] – Steven Sharif
Guild hall skins
Guild halls serve as a focal point for a guild, offering a host of benefits and customization options.[84]
- When a guild reaches a certain level, its guild master is granted a certificate to enable placement of a guild hall.[85]
- Guild halls may be placed within Baronies within the ZOI of a node.[54]
- A barony can only have a single guild hall.[54]
- The number of baronies that can have an active guild hall is determined by the node's stage.[86][87]
- Only a limited subset of the guild halls available around the node are available concurrently... So you might only have two that might be available at fifth level and then three at sixth level of a node; and the guilds have an opportunity to select from the six available which three are going to be active.[86] – Steven Sharif
- Patron guilds may also place their guild hall within (the footprint of) their patron node. These guild halls have different perks and benefits to halls placed within Baronies.[88][85][89][88]
- Patron guild halls placed within Baronies may have the ability to confer benefits to surrounding estates within that node by speccing into passives in their guild skill tree and carrying out a lengthy quest line.[90]
- The design of guild-halls is currently subject to active iteration by the developers.[91]
- Guild halls can only be destroyed by a successful node siege. This contrasts with guild fortresses, which can be sieged in a guild war.[85][92][93]
- Guild halls are objectives in guild wars.[92]
- A guild hall only houses a single guild.[94]
Costumes
Costumes were available for purchase from the cosmetic store.[57]
- They do not include any weapons pictured.[97]
- Costumes are one piece outfits that cover all gear slots regardless of armor type.[98][96][99][100][101]
- Full costumes do not mix and match pieces.[101] – Steven Sharif
- Costumes don't have a level restriction or require an in-game item to be obtained first.[12][10]
- Costumes are not gender or race locked, but can adapt based on a character's gender and race.[102][103][28][29]
- Racial skins appear along with any costume appearances.[50][48]
- All hoods and head slot items, whether part of a complete costume or individual gear, will have the option to be shown or hidden on the character by the player.[104][96][105]
Accessory skins
Akcesoria to wizualne skórki, które da się zakupić w sklepie kosmetycznym.[3]
Mount barding skins
Mount barding (also referred to as Saddles) is armor for mounts in Ashes of Creation. Mount barding is similar in concept to player armor.[107]
- The higher the level of barding, the better looking it will be.[107]
- Barding will have multiple components that can be equipped. Each component will increase the stats of the mount, such as hit points and speed.[108][107]
- Barding cosmetics can only be applied to mounts with barding cosmetic slots.[109]
- Cosmetic skins may only be applied to barding/saddle items that are earned in-game.[110]
- Barding skins can not be applied over a mount skin.[111]
- The mount skins are applied to the mount, and barding (think of it like an accessory appearance) can not be applied over the mount skin.[111] – Cody Peterson
- Barding skins' appearance may differ depending on the type of mount.[109]
Housing decorations
Housing decorations were available for purchase from the cosmetic store.
Gear appearance
- Gear is intended to be realistic in appearance.[112][113][114]
- Armor will not be overly sexual in appearance.[112][114]
- I'm more of the mind that it wouldn't really serve a purpose to have bikini plate armor, just in like reality, if you're going to have armor, it should be protective. I think from a fashion statement is enjoyable for some people, but it's a an immersive issue.[113] – Steven Sharif
- Some armor and costumes will be more revealing than others, but there will not be nudity in the game.[116]
- There might be sliders, but there are not gonna be naked sliders.[116] – Steven Sharif
- Each race is getting its custom geo pieces, which then will share thematic components such as color palette, attachments, design filigree. Those types of things will get shared across the geo but generally you're going to see unique races with unique geo.[120] – Steven Sharif
- The appearance of crafted gear is influenced by its rarity.[121]
- Crafters are able to influence what their crafted items look like.[123][124]
- Cosmetics can be used by all races but there may be slight variations to make them work with the body builds of each race.[28]
- Dye cosmetics can be used to change gear colors.[38][125][126]
Appearance slots/Transmogs
Gear will have appearance slots (Transmutation/Transmog/cosmetic slots) that are used to copy the appearance of an item (in some cases).[132][133]
- There are rules when applying cosmetics to specific items, unlike costumes, which don't have level restrictions.[10]
- Cosmetic slots can be toggled on or off on their character by the player.[134]
- A "default player appearance" may be automatically applied during sieges or other large scale battles to improve client-side performance.[135][136]
- Cosmetics, whether purchased from the shop or earned in game, are an important component of MMORPGS I personally enjoy; and there's a lot of collectors out there who spend a great deal of time either in-game achieving these things or spend money purchasing them from the cosmetic only marketplace; and we don't want to demean or reduce that achievement or that expenditure. So it's going to be situational where the default appearance will be applied and can be activated.[135] – Steven Sharif
Ashes of Creation Apocalypse cosmetics
Ashes of Creation Apocalypse cosmetic rewards
Progression and experience tracking for participation in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse testing entitled players to earn unique cosmetic rewards. These earned rewards will carry over in player's accounts to live launch of the MMORPG.[138][139]
- Armor appearances.[139]
- Costumes.[138][140]
- Emotes.[138]
- Freehold building skins.[138]
- Furniture.[138]
- Hairstyles.[140]
- Mounts.[138][140]
- Pets.[141]
- Weapon skins.[138][140][142][143]
One of the ways we want to give back to the Community in participating in this testing is allowing for progress, quests, achievements rewards to be gained in Apocalypse... You will have rewards and quests and achievements that you and your participation and your performance in that game, whether it be the Castle Siege, the Horde Mode or the Battle Royale will earn you cosmetics. There will be costumes. There will be mounts to earn. There will be housing and furniture. There will be emotes. There will be weapon variants. A lot of these are what we have in production for our project Ashes of Creation, we apply some variants and skins for and make them only available through participating in helping us test these different game modes. And they will carry over to your account on the MMORPG.[138] – Steven Sharif
The account used for Apocalypse is the same account used for the MMORPG. Unique skins earned in Apocalypse will be added to the MMORPG as rewards for helping to prepare for the Alpha and Beta stages of Ashes of Creation.[143]
- Cosmetic skins are only be able to be applied to things that have already been earned, crafted or found within the Ashes of Creation MMORPG.[8]
- Skins earned in Apocalypse will be available to apply at certain tiers, levels and/or access points within the MMORPG.[8]
So it's not that you'll be able to equip necessarily an item at level one. These are all cosmetic skins. Again we are not about the pay-to-win or pay-to-convenience life. What we want to do instead is as you earn, craft, or find equipment in the MMORPG, these skins that you've earned in Apocalypse will be available at certain tiers, levels and/or access points. So for example, we have different grades of mounts right. We have the base one land mounts. We have the Royal mounts. We have the flying mounts if you're a mayor or King or Queen. We have legendary mounts. These classes of mounts will have available skins associated with those particular classes... If you have the Ramstider skin that you've earned from Apocalypse, you'll be able to apply that to your first land mount, which will probably be earned within the first five levels you'll earn a land mount. However if you have let's say for example the Gryphon, which will be a glideable mount. I'm sorry what's the name of the what's the name of the night one. The midnight- is the midnight bird or something like? The Nighthunter Gryphon. I think that's it. If you have that skin you'll only be able to apply that skin to a Royal mount so you'll still have to earn these things. Remember our position is that of: You need to earn these things in Ashes first. They're not purchasable or earned outside in Apocalypse and you're granted that immediately. These are skins that you apply to the things you earn in Ashes.[8] – Steven Sharif
These cosmetics reflect the lore of Ashes of Creation Apocalypse, which is set before the fall.[139]
- Armor appearances will reflect the ancient cultures of Verra.[139]
One thing that we announced to our alpha one backers that I know they love clarity on is that we'll also be including progression and experience tracking for participation and testing that will entitle them to some unique cosmetics as well that reflect on the lore of this setting, which is before the fall. So you'll be able to acquire some armors that reflect some of the ancient cultures of Verra that you will earn and hold for live launch.[139] – Steven Sharif
It would be like your ancestors kept these curios for you.[139] – Jeffrey Bard
Examples of some Kickstarter rewards will be included in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse.[144]
