The character creator (or character customization system) allows players to define the look of their in-game characters, hired NPCs; and potentially creatures raised by the animal husbandry profession.[2][7]

The Ashes of Creation character creator is 100% developed in-house by Intrepid Studios and is not MetaHuman.[5]

Additional character creator features include.

  • There will be unlockable features for character customization.[11]
You have that scar because you participated in this siege, or these many sieges; or you have this tattoo because of your of a cultural background, or because of a quest that was accomplished where you're able to get that.[11]Steven Sharif

There's going to be a lot of environmental controls that are offered to the character creator so that people can set it up their scene the way they want to grab screenshots or to grab recordings or whatever they want to do.[17]Steven Sharif
  • Asymmetry in terms of manipulating different components of the body or different body features such as hair, beard, and eyes.[18]
Asymmetry is going to be functionality that's possible in manipulating either different components of the body or different features like hair. The beard we saw a little bit of that blending with highlights that you can do. Margaret talked a little bit about the eye asymmetry that you can include. Obviously those are going to exist within certain parameters that we want to define on a per-race basis, but it is something that we think is cool.[18]Steven Sharif
  • Body adornments, such as piercings will be possible within cultural limits.[19]
  • The developers are considering whether to allow custom tattoos to be uploaded by users.[20]

The aim is for the character creator to be on par if not much better than that of BDO.[21][22]

Character appearance

There is a great variation that's going to be available from a character standpoint when creating your character, especially around the face. Whether it be the shape of the jawline, the cheeks, the ears, the nose, the lips. You know we want to provide a lot of options and an agency to the player to customize their character appearance.[24]Steven Sharif

Character appearance can be customized in the character creator (CC)[26] and via in-game salons/barbershops.[11][27]

We want there to be a lot of room for people to manifest their own identity, to role play how they want to from an appearance standpoint. There's going to be parameters within which you will be able to customize a character. We want the culture and the identity of the races to exist in a range that makes them easily identifiable from other players and other cultures. So, because of that, we have to have a spectrum you can exist on. There will be a lot of hair variants you can do, body art tattoos that you can apply. You'll be able to play with the scales of the facial structure, the bones, the height, width, the body fat percentage. You'll be able to add body hair on different parts of the body. If you want to have hair on your feet, you can dial that up.[28]Steven Sharif
  • Character models are focused on realism.[29]
  • A player will see a generic character before customization.[30]
  • Character designs will have influences from a wide range of cultures, such as European, African and Asian.[31]
  • Lolis will not be in the game.[32][33]
  • Sliders and other controls, such as color palettes, will offer flexibility in customization but there will be limits based on race, gender, and the artistic style guidelines that the developers are adhering to.[34][35][32][36][37]
There's going to be constraints to the sliders, so that was one of those big questions as work began on the character creator: How much agency do you want to allow pulling like the lower lip all the way down in this weird deformed look, or having like [an] offset cheek that's just asymmetrical to the side of the face. There's not going to be the ability or agency to create those types of weird character things. However you will have the ability to move, slide, change, grow, decrease all those components, but they'll be kept in a more reasonable and presented way in the same sense you won't be able to change the appearance of the dwarven, nor the Dünir or the Niküan races to, in my opinion, create what would be traditionally considered a Loli character.[32]Steven Sharif

Cosmetic items

Cosmetic items allow players to customize their character in-game.[8]

  • Eye color.
  • Skin color.
  • Hair color.
  • Hairstyles.
  • Tattoos.
  • Scars.

Cosmetic items that produce in-game cosmetic effects will also be available.[38]

Dyeable items

Dyes only affect tagged portions of dyeable armor or cosmetic items.[39]

  • The dyeability of costumes depends on the specific costume.[39]

Outside of wanting to keep maybe some identity from a lore perspective; for example if you have like a white lion's suit of armor, you may not want that white lion suit of armor to be black or blue. So, it's possible. It depends on the costume itself.[39]Steven Sharif

Emoji

Emoji adds additional flare either for chat or character representation (social animations).[40][41][8]

Early access

Character page

There is no planned in-game functionality to leave personal notes regarding player characters.[43]

We don't plan to have in-game tools to provide that tracking. Instead you will be expected to track that yourselves.[43]Steven Sharif

A character sheet will be available closer to live launch that shows the following:[44]

  • What a character looks like.[44]
  • Achievements and server firsts.[44]
  • Info on a player's class.[44]
  • Character's back story via journal entries (that are shared publicly by the player).[45][46]
  • Traits can be applied that describe a character's history.[46]
You will have a unique homepage for each character and that homepage will be able to be customized by the user to display unique information. It will have a small out-of-game RPG component where you can construct background and traits and stuff like that.[46]Steven Sharif

The character page will be accessible in game by opening a browser through the UI.[45]

That's part of the character sheet desire for us which hopefully will be accessible in game as well by opening a browser through our UI where you can get back history of a character that that character has input themselves into journal entries that they may choose to share with others... The player can manage what info is shown on the character page.[44]

Character naming

Characters will have a first-name and an optional surname (last name).[47]

  • There is a minimum length of three for a character name.[49]
  • Special characters, including apostrophes and hyphens, are currently not allowed in character names.[50]
Currently we don't allow special characters in character names (including apostrophes and/or hyphens). It's possible this changes in the future.[50]Ry Schueller

Character names will appear on the character sheet and optionally on the character website page.[51]

  • In-game a character's name is displayed above their head. This can be the first or last name.[51]

Tulnar

There's a number of minor races and major races that all sought refuge within the Underrealm and we talked about how this particular player character race was going to have a pretty unique approach when it comes to character customization because with that background there comes different species influence in the race itself and we want players to be able to dial up or down those influences as they see fit between the humanoid, the simian or mammalian, and the reptilian influences; and as you dial those things up, your base body- if it exceeds a certain percentage threshold- will assume the form and stance of one of three primary types of influences that exist for the Tulnar. And now what you're going to see is those three distinct influences and you can be of course a hundred percent in one if you wish and you'll be very similar to what you're going to see here from the concepts; or you can mix-and-match and you can blend between the different influences.[53]Steven Sharif

The Tulnar race does not have sub-types. Instead, players will be able to significantly customize the appearance of Tulnar characters based on three base influences; or blend between these different influences.[53][54][55][56][57][58]

Races are primarily humanoid in appearance.[59]

  • There are feline and bestial components that can be scaled up when creating a Tulnar character but Tulnar do not equal furries.[32][55]
  • Catgirl and Loli Tulnar are not able to be created.[32]
Tulnar do not equal furries, but there are definitely some bestial components that you can scale up when you're creating your Tulnar character, so you could max that setting I guess. Whether or not that would give you what you would think of as a furry, I guess it's going to be up to your interpretation of what a Furry is.[55]Steven Sharif
Q: Will character creator allow us to make Tulnar that might look somewhat like Kobolds from Pathfinder or DnD?
A: I wouldn't say exactly, but there's definitely elements of Kobolds that you could incorporate in a character creator with the Tulnar, yes.[61]Steven Sharif

  • Mammalian Tulnar may have snout features, fur and inverted knees.[62]
  • Reptilian Tulnar may have more circular eyes and head shape, and scaly skin.[62]

Racial skins

Racial skins enable a player to change their character's racial appearance.[63][64]

  • Racial skins transform the race of the character to that skin. The original racial appearance of the character is entirely replaced.[65]
  • Racial skins can be toggled on and off.[64]

You're changing your race over to that, which means that you won't look uniquely different if you were a Vek angel or a Human angel.[65]Steven Sharif

Racial skins are not costumes. This means that armor and character customization is possible on these.[66]

  • Skin color customization.[67]
  • Racial skins appear along with any costume appearances.[68]

There are plans to create other racial skins.[69]

  • Some potential future ideas include undead and werewolf (lycan) skins.[70]

Costumes

The costume cosmetics that are included in each month's pre-order set are indeed a full piece, and when you put it on it will cover your entire appearance. You will not be able to mix and match/toggle those pieces individually (other than your helmet) when you're wearing the entire costume. This is partially why there is a separate category for accessories - those are able to be worn/equipped on a more individualized basis, so you can mix and match to your liking![72]Sarah Flanagan

Armor appearance

We want to be realistic with the application of particular types of armor, such as plate armor. In this regard for the different sexes there's a fine line that has to be drawn between accentuating the form of the sex as well as making it somewhat realistic and actually applicable to the environment.[87]Steven Sharif

  • Armor will not be overly sexual in appearance.[87][89]
    I'm more of the mind that it wouldn't really serve a purpose to have bikini plate armor, just in like reality, if you're going to have armor, it should be protective. I think from a fashion statement is enjoyable for some people, but it's a an immersive issue.[88]Steven Sharif
    • Some armor and costumes will be more revealing than others, but there will not be nudity in the game.[91]
    There might be sliders, but there are not gonna be naked sliders.[91]Steven Sharif
Each race is getting its custom geo pieces, which then will share thematic components such as color palette, attachments, design filigree. Those types of things will get shared across the geo but generally you're going to see unique races with unique geo.[95]Steven Sharif
  • Cosmetics can be used by all races but there may be slight variations to make them work with the body builds of each race.[83]
  • Hair will likely be masked if helmet display is toggled on.[104]

Attachments

Attachments are able to be unlocked as flair pieces to armor to create a customizable look.[107]

  • There will be hundreds of attachments available ranging from a small clasp to the front plate of a breast plate.[107]

Modular armor

You can start to see like some of the components that we put together that we can mix and match and make new armors from. This is the base chassis for all of that.[108]Jeffrey Bard

Your base look for the character can be pretty boring, but what Steven gave us a challenge with from day one was to make sure even the base look, the t-shirt and pants, looked amazing... This is your zero character, if you will... Then you can go in and customize everything from the shoulder pads to the elbow pads, the belt that goes around them; do you want duel belts, you want to harness the clothes in the front. So every piece you see on here you can actually customize that at the front end. So what we do is we scale that up from zero, ten and twenty... We scale it up and we customize it; and then I want to really stress that each one of those looks as you progress is different. We're not just repurposing the same armor pieces. We're making unique sets that complement each other as you progress.[108]Mat Broome

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse will have three different armor themes: Plate, leather and robe.[109]

You can actually have three different types of themes: You have plate, you'll have leather and you'll have robe. So for every armor set that we're showing at each one of those tiers, you're actually gonna have nine unique looks to pick from.[109]Mat Broome
