Generic Gaming Abbreviations

AAA The term "triple A" refers to games and game developers with large marketing budgets. It is diametrically opposed to "indie" games or studios.
Adds The reinforcements that a boss summons.
AFK Away From Keyboard.
Aggro To have hostile attention from NPCs. Also referred to as threat or hatred.
AOE Area of Effect; the area where a weapon or spell is working.
BBL Be Back Later.
BiS Acronym for 'best in slot', which refers to the best possible piece of gear for a specific equipment slot.
BoE Short for "bind on equip", This term refers to items that become soulbound to the player after they have been equipped. In other words, the item can be traded as long as no one equips it.
BoP Short for "bind on pickup", This term refers to items that become soulbound to the player after it has been picked up from a monster. In other words, the item cannot be traded once a player picks it up.
BRB Be Right Back.
Buff Temporary boost to character attribute or combat ability. Antonym of Debuff.
CC "Crowd Control"; Refers to a set of spells / abilities that temporarily paralyze or stun other mobs or players.
CD Cooldown or The time to refresh an ability.
Debuff Temporary decline to character attribute or combat ability. Antonym of Buff.
DLC "Downloadable Content"; used to reference additional updates to online games after their release in the form of paid, or free, content expansions.
DoT Damage over Time, An effect that deals damage over a period of time; antonym of HoT.
DPS Damage per second.
F2W/P "Free to Win/Play"; a monetization model that is diametrically opposed to the standard "Pay to Win/P2W" games.
FAQ "Frequently Asked Questions"; Area where the most Frequently Asked Questions are answered or probable solutions can be found.
Gank 'Ganking' usually indicates an unwelcome attack on an unwilling or unsuspecting participant.
GF Good Fight, Also used as the same was as "gg".
GG(s) Used as parting words exchanged at the end of a competitive game or match as a gesture of good sportsmanship.
Griefer A player who deliberately irritates and harasses other players. Many MMOs enforce rules that forbid griefing.
HoT Heal over Time, An effect that restores health over a period of time; antonym of DoT.
HUD "Heads-Up Display"; Any transparent display that displays data without needing viewers to shift their gaze away from their typical vantage points.
Kiting A maneuver in which a player-character gets an enemy NPC to chase after them so as to lead them somewhere else (like a kite on a string).
LF/LFM "looing for"/"looking for more"; Terms used interchangeably when looking to add more players to an already formed party to complete or enjoy content in the game.
LFG "looking for group"; Term used to refer when you are looking for players to form a party to complete or enjoy content in the game.
LoS Line of sight. A requirement of most ranged abilities, the view of the target must not be obstructed by any fixed obstacle such as a wall.
META/Meta Very common, strong ways of playing the game. Often in the context of character builds or combat tactics.
Min-Maxing Creating the "best" character by means of minimizing undesired or unimportant traits and maximizing desired ones.
Mob Mob is a term for an in-game enemy who roams a specific area. An Enemy NPC.
nerf A change intended to weaken a particular item, ability, or character, for balancing purposes.
Ninja looting To unfairly loot the corpse of a fallen enemy.
NPC "Non-player character"; A computer-controlled character or any character that is not under a player's direct control.
NT Nice Try, an expression used to honor a failed attempt that was close to succeeding.
OOM Out Of Mana.
OTW/OMW On the way/On my way.
P2W "Pay to Win"; a monetization model that emphasizes paying actual currency for items or tools in-game which affect the structure of "Winning".
PK "Player Killing"; Term used when one player kills another outside of normal PVP events.
Proc Abbreviation of "programmed random occurrence", refers to the benefits of added damage or other buffing enhancement that occurs randomly when an item strikes or is used.
Prog Short for 'Progress'. People often discuss their 'progress' in a raid encounter or how far into the fight they're at.
PUG Pick-up group.
PVE Player versus Environment. Instead of competing against the live participants, players battle against NPC/AI.
PVP Player versus Player. Instead of competing against the computer, players battle against live participants.
RMT Abbreviation for Real Money Trade - selling virtual currency or items for real currency. Could also mean Real Money Transfer.
Rubber Banding The result of network latency during a multiplayer game; players teleporting to locations. (lag)
Soulbound An item-control mechanic where an item cannot be traded. In other words, only one person can own the object and it cannot be traded. See also BoE and BoP.
Spec Short for specification. When used in games, it usually refers to the build/specifications of your character in terms of skills/abilities/magic/powers/etc.
Teabagging An act usually considered disrespectful and provocative, consisting of a player-character repeatedly crouching and standing back up right next to or over a knocked down or dead opponent.
Trash Non-boss mobs in dungeons and raids.
Wipe To "wipe" means for the entire group whether party or raid to all die.
WP Well Played, Used in the same way as "gg".
XP/EXP Experience Points.
Zerg A combat strategy where a large group of players rush in at the target.
